Robert Burns The 25th of January is probably one of the most important dates in the Scots' calander. This being the birthday of the famous Ayrshire bard, Robert Burns, who lived from the years 1759 to 1796. Although Burns died at the early age of 37, in that short time he took the Scottish literary world by storm with his poems and ballads, and his collections of Scottish folk songs from the Highlands, Stirlingshire and the Borders. Today, Scots all over the world come together on or around Burns’ birthday to celebrate his life and works. These gatherings are known as Burns Suppers. Burns suppers all share the same principles of eating haggis, the recital of Burns' poems and ballads accompanied by whisky and various toasts to the bard. The Bagpipes are an essential part of any Burns Supper. The piper will lead the Haggis into the room playing the Burns song "A Man's a Man for A' That". The Address to a Haggis then takes place, after which a toast is drunk. The piper can then play a selection of Burns or other tunes just before the dinner is served and also later in the evening if required.
